Golden fried prawns or shrimps are coated with batter and deep fried. These crispy prawns golden fry are perfect shrimp appetizers for any party. These easy prawn recipes can be served with drinks too. The crispy batter fried prawns are a delicacy at home. The mildly spiced golden fried prawns get over within minutes. This is a kid friendly prawn recipe too. These juicy batter fried shrimps are an easy recipe and can be cooked within 15 minutes.
Ingredients to make deep fried prawns:
- Prawns: Prawns or shrimps are used in this golden fried prawns recipe.
- Spice powders: Spice powders used in this
- Flour: I have used all purpose flour and rice flour to make deep fried shrimp batter. Rice flour is used to make the coating crispy.
- Baking soda: I have added a pinch of cooking or baking soda to this recipe so that they turn light and fluffy.
- Oil: Use any type of oil like vegetable oil or sunflower oil for deep frying.
How to cook golden fried prawns?
- First step to make any recipe with prawns is to wash, de-shell, devein and marinate them. You can check this video to know how to de-shell and devein prawns.
- I have marinated prawns for 10 minutes, you can do it even for 30 minutes. For marination, I have applied red chili powder, turmeric powder and salt. You may marinate them with black pepper powder and salt if red chili powder and turmeric powder is not available.
- In a mixing bowl, add the two flours – rice flour and all-purpose flours and then add the spice powders and make a thick batter. Ensure that there are no lumps in the batter.
- Heat oil in a pan, test if oil is ready for deep frying, by dropping little batter in the oil. If oil is ready the batter will rise and quickly get fried. Else it will shrink to the bottom. This explains how to deep fry shrimps with flour.

How to serve golden batter fried prawns?
These golden fried Indo – Chinese prawns can be served hot with any type of spicy chutney or with tomato sauce as a side dish with drink. You can also serve them as an appetizer for any party with chicken fried rice and prawn schezwan noodles. I love to eat it as it is.
Golden Fried Prawns | Batter Fried Shrimps
Ingredients
- 15 prawns
- 2 cups oil for deep frying
For the batter:
- 4 tablespoon all-purpose flour / maida
- 2 tablespoon rice flour
- 1 teaspoon black pepper powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- A pinch baking soda optional
- 10 tablespoon water
For marination:
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Wash the prawns. De-shell and devein them. Marinate the prawns and keep aside for 10 minutes.
- In a mixing bowl, mix the 2 flours (rice flour and all-purpose flour). Add black pepper powder and red chili powder and salt and mix.
- Add water and make a thick paste or batter.
- Add the baking soda and mix well.
- Heat oil in a kadai/pan. Test if the oil is heated by dropping a drop of batter into the oil. If the drop of batter rises and gets fried immediately, it means that the oil is ready for deep-frying.
- Coat the marinated prawns with the batter and gently drop them into the heated oil in batches of 4 to 5 prawns depending on the size of the pan.
- Gently turn the prawns to the other side when they turn golden and let them get cooked.
- Deep fry them for 3 to 4 minutes till they turn brownish.
- Take them out of the kadai/pan and drain them on a tissue paper.
Notes
