Easy crab curry is a delicious Indian curry made with crabs, onion, tomato, and some spices. This simple crab curry is bursting with flavors and so delicious.
The spicy crab curry was an experiment in the kitchen. This recipe turned so good and is a keeper. Plus, point is that this crab recipe is super easy to make. Just be sure to keep all the masalas ready.
Let us see the ingredients that go in making the best crab curry recipe:
- Crabs: I have used blue sea crabs. You can use soft shell crabs, mud crabs or large orange crabs too. Any edible crab can be used to making this delicious easy crab curry.
For Marinating the crabs:
- I have used basic spices like turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt to marinate the crabs. These are available in any Indian kitchen and any Indian grocery store.
For making the spicy masala for crab curry:
- Vegetables: Red onion and tomatoes are used for making the curry. Apart from that some spices are also used as listed below.
- Spices: Bay leaf, garlic pods, coriander powder, cumin powder, black pepper powder and chili powder are used in adding taste and flavor to this easy crab recipe.
For garnish:
- Coriander leaves or cilantro is used for garnishing the curry.

How to make crab curry?
- Wash and clean the crabs. Cut each crab into 4 pieces. Cut the crab legs into 2 pieces.
Marinate the crab pieces with the masala meant for marination – that is turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt. Keep aside for 20-30 minutes. - Heat a pan and add oil.
- After oil gets heated, add chopped onion.
- After onion turns pinkish, add paste made from the garlic pods. Sauté for some time with lid of the pan closed.
- Add chopped tomatoes, bay leaf, and stir everything. Cook till the tomatoes turn mushy.
- Now add all the spice powders and mix well.
- Add the marinated crabs and mix. Add 1/2 cup water if needed.
- I preferred some gravy, so I added 1/2 cup water. You can increase the water quantity to 1 cup.
- Let the crabs get cooked in this gravy for at least 20 minutes.
- Add salt to taste. Remember that some salt was already added to the crabs while marinating it.
- When the crabs get cooked in this gravy, the flavor of the crabs will get mixed in the gravy and thus it will be delicious.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
How to serve this simple crab curry?
Serve this crab curry with jeera rice or fried rice or plain steamed rice. You can also serve it with bread or Indian breads like roti, chapati or naan.
