Goan Lady Fish Curry / Muddoshi Hooman

Muddoshi curry or Lady fish curry is a delicious Goan fish curry made with lady fish or kane fish. Muddoshi fish in English is known as lady fish or silver fish whiting. The method to cook muddoshi hooman with radish mentioned below belongs to the Goan Saraswat cuisine recipes.

Lady fish curry

Goan fish curry can be made with different fish like mackerel, sardines, king fish, anchovies, pearl spot, black pomfret, prawns, etc. The method to prepare Goan human recipe is almost same. Every day a fish curry will be on the lunch menu in Goa except for days when people prefer to eat vegetarian food.

Normally the traditional Goan fish furry does not contain garlic. Garlic is added only to Malvani fish curries. The original taste for the Saraswat Goan fish curries can be found right here on Raksha’s Kitchen. Also another thing to note is, I added coriander seeds to this fish curry and no “teffala” i.e Sichuan pepper. “Teffala” should be added only to fish curries like sardines curry or Mackerel fish curry.

The addition of different spices makes the lady fish curry spicy and tamarind makes it tangy. All the flavors blend well and hence this fish curry tastes awesome.

In Goa, muddoshi fish is found in abundance. If you happen to visit Goa, make sure to visit Colva beach early in the morning. You will get to see at least 20-40 trawlers full of fish and fisher folks coming to the shore and emptying the buckets full of fish there. The fisher folks wait for their respective trawlers and sort out the fish. They divide the fish and everyone takes their share to sell in the local market where it is sold at nominal.

Some of them go door to door selling their fish by yelling “Nustya zai goh?โ€ meaning “Anyone wants fish?”. The people living in Goa are lucky as they get fresh sea fish delivered to their door step everyday.

Ingredients to prepare lady fish curry:

  • Lady fish: Lady Fish is locally known as muddoshi in Goa and kane fish in Mangalore. It is one of the tastiest sea fish. The fish is long, slender and silver in colour. The fish is clean and light to digest too. Click here to get more information on lady fish.
  • Grated coconut: Freshly grated coconut is used in this recipe. You can even use coconut milk. In that case, replace all spices for spiced powders.
  • Onion: I used red onion in this recipe. Do not use any other type of onion in this recipe.
  • Radish: A vegetable like radish makes this fish curry tasty and delicious. The pungent flavor of radish blends well in this fish recipe.
  • Spices: Different spices like coriander seeds, dry red chilies like byadgi or shepda, black pepper corns, tamarind and turmeric powder (curry powder) is used. The addition of different spices makes the fish curry spicy and tamarind makes the curry tangy. All the flavors blend well and hence this fish curry tastes awesome. All the spices can be found in an Indian grocery store.
