Today’s recipe is Drumstick dal. I have been making different types of dal everyday. My daughter loves dal and rice and hence I prepare it in different ways by adding different types of vegetables. Adding different vegetables like palak, drumsticks, tomatoes, onion, capsicum, etc. makes it nutritious and is a good way to cheat the kid to eat health food.
Not just for kids but adults too can reap health benefits of drumsticks and dal by eating drumstick dal. Drumsticks are rich in proteins and minerals and are extremely healthy. Since it is rich in calcium and iron and vitamins, consumption of drumsticks helps build strong bones. It purifies blood, improves immune system and helps in digestion. Lentils such as toor dal are also rich in iron and proteins. Our diet should always be balanced.
Most of the time women have iron deficiency. This might be caused due to increased iron demand or decreased iron intake. Iron is an important mineral which is needed by the body for haemoglobin. Lack of iron in body causes anaemia. Number of factors like pregnancy, monthly periods, chronic kidney disease, improper diet, gastrointestinal blood loss or conditions like malabsorption cause anaemia. Hence it is important that we women eat a balanced diet which is rich in proteins, vitamins, calcium, iron and other nutrients.

When you go through the recipe, you will notice that I have boiled dal and drumsticks separately. That is because, if I pressure cook dal and drumsticks together, drumsticks will become over-cooked and mashy. Boiling it separately ensures that drumsticks don’t become mashy. I have also added tadka in same pan. You can use a separate tadka pan and add tadka to dal which is in cooker. Serve this drumstick dal with rice and subzi. Drumstick Dal
Ingredients
- 2 drumsticks peeled and cut into 2 inch sized pieces
- 1/2 cup toor dal
- 1 medium sized Tomato finely chopped
- 1/2 medium sized onion finely chopped
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 2 dry red chillies
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon Jeera (Cumin seeds)
- A pinch asafoetida
- 4 garlic pods chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
- 2 teaspoon oil
- Few Coriander Leaves chopped for garnish
- To taste Salt
Instructions
- Boil the drumsticks in a small utensil by adding 2 cups water. Keep it aside.
- Wash the toor dal and keep aside for 30 minutes.
- Take the pressure cooker pan and heat it. Add onion, tomato and toor dal along with 2 cups water and pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles or till dal is cooked. Switch off the gas and wait till pressure from cooker is released on its own.
- Heat a kadai and add oil. After it gets heated add mustard seeds.
- After mustard seeds flutter, add cumin seeds, asafeotida, dry red chillies and curry leaves and fry for few 2 minutes.
- Add chopped garlic and sauté till raw smell of garlic goes away.
- Add turmeric powder and red chilli powder and mix well.
- Add boiled dal from the pressure cooker and mix.
- Also take the boiled drumsticks and add them to the cooked dal and simmer for 5 minutes on low heat.
- Add salt to taste.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot.
