Ingredients

  • For Marinating the crabs:
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • For making the masala:
  • 4 crabs
  • 3 medium sized onions finely chopped
  • 2 medium sized tomatoes finely chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 10 garlic pods
  • 2 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Chopped coriander leaves for garnish
  • 1/2 cup water optional
  • 4 tablespoon oil
  • To taste salt

Instructions

  • Wash and clean the crabs. Cut each crab into 4 pieces. Cut the crab legs into 2 pieces.
  • Marinate the crab pieces with the masala meant for marination – that is turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt. Keep aside for 30 minutes.
  • Heat a pan and add oil.
  • After oil gets heated, add chopped onion.
  • After onion turns pinkish, add paste made from the garlic pods. Sauté for some time with lid of the pan closed.
  • Add chopped tomatoes, bay leaf, and stir everything. Cook till the tomatoes turn mushy.
  • Now add all the spice powders that is coriander powder, cumin powder, black pepper powder, chili powder and mix well.
  • Add the marinated crabs and mix. Add 1/2 cup water if needed.
  • I preferred some gravy, so I added 1/2 cup water. You can increase the water quantity to 1 cup.
  • Let the crabs get cooked in this gravy for at least 20 minutes.
  • Add salt to taste. Remember that some salt was already added to the crabs while marinating it.
  • When the crabs get cooked in this gravy, the flavor of the crabs will get mixed in the gravy and thus it will be impressive.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
