King Fish Cafreal

King fish cafreal is a Goan fish cafreal recipe in which fish is marinated in a tangy and spicy coriander sauce. The coriander sauce is also known as Goan green coriander paste which is made by grinding coriander leaves, spices, lime juice, chilies, ginger, and garlic. Cafreal is a dish which belongs to the Goan Portuguese cuisine. Get step by step pictures and video to make fish cafreal.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams king fish or 5 king fish slices of medium thickness
  • 1 bunch coriander leaves
  • 2 green chilies
  • 8 garlic pods
  • 1/2- inch ginger
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 inch cinnamon
  • 5 black peppercorns
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • Little water
  • 3 - 4 tablespoon oil or as needed

Instructions

  • Wash the king fish slices and apply salt to them.
  • In a mixer jar, add coriander leaves, green chilies, garlic, ginger, lime juice and spices like cinnamon, black peppercorns, cloves, and cumin seeds.
    Add little water and grind to make a thick green paste. Add turmeric powder and mix well.
  • Apply the green paste to the king fish slices and massage the fish with the Goan green paste. Keep it aside for 15 minutes. Keep some green paste aside.
  • Heat a frying pan and add oil. After oil gets heated, place the seer fish/surmai slices in the frying pan. Spread little oil on top of the fish slices and fry for 10 minutes on low flame. After some time, flip to other side and fry for 5 more minutes.
  • After the fish is slightly cooked, remove and keep it aside on a plate.
  • In the same frying pan, add the remaining green paste and fry it on low flame till it changes color.
  • Gently place the fried king fish slices in the frying pan. Add some green paste from the frying pan on top of the fish slices and fry on both sides for few minutes.
  • Garnish with onion and lime slices and serve hot.

Notes

  • Cooking time will depend on the thickness of the fish slices.
  • This same fish cafreal can be made with other types of fish like pomfret or prawns or shrimp.
  • You can prepare the cafreal masala in advance and store in the fridge for up to a week in an airtight container. The masala can be used just before cooking the fish.
  • Instead of lime juice, vinegar can be used.
